The brief
A family in Flic en Flac wanted to live outside — shade from the midday sun, shelter from the summer rain, and a deck where the children could play barefoot.
How we solved it
We built a treated pine pergola off the back of the house with a polycarbonate-covered section over the dining table, and laid hardwood decking on a ventilated subframe so it dries quickly after rain. Wide steps double as informal seating.
